Tambopata Reserve
Tambopata is a reserve well known by biologists around the world due to its great diversity of animal and plant species. Its record breaking numbers of species include: 575 types of birds and more than 1,200 species of butterfly. The world famous Macaw “Collpa” or clay lick is also found here. Endangered species such as the giant river otters and the Harpy eagle also make their home in the reserve. There are many Brazil nut harvesting sites and high quality ecotourism lodges within the reserve too. The area is in the territory of the native Ese’ejas who promote the sustainable use of the natural resources. 274,690 hectares of tropical rainforest are protected within the department of Madre de Dios, for the sustainable use of its resources.
